The oil palm industry is one of the largest in the world. It covers a vast amount of land, namely at least 26 million hectares, of which 16.4 million hectares are in Indonesia alone, in Malaysia 5.35 million hectares of plantations and in Thailand 1 million hectares. In Latin America, Colombia leads the way as the main palm oil producing country in the region and the fourth largest in the world. In 2021, it reached a volume of almost 1,850 thousand tons of palm oil in Latin America, and a growth of 3.1% is expected in the coming years.
Sustainable oil palm production has been a major concern in Colombia and the world. For several years, the implementation of strategies for its sustainable production has been promoted, since deforestation has been associated with its cultivation. In this sense, Colombia has been working to promote the manufacture of palm oil in a sustainable and responsible manner.
Oil palm industry is one of the most important for the economy of producing countries, as it is an important source of income and employment generation. In Colombia, it will provide close to 181,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2020, at a ratio of 1 direct formal job and 2.5 indirect jobs for every 7.5 hectares of oil palm planted.
